I’ve Come Along Way

I’m speaking about my computer savvy strictly. God knows I’ve progressed less significantly in other areas over the past year, but those things have come along as well. Not quite ‘a looong way,’ but progress. Anyhew, back to non-emotive tech stuff:

From barely knowing what a torrent was a year ago to hosting 4 or 5 websites on my Ubuntu 14.04 server with a lubuntu desktop, which is just a virtual machine via hyper-v on my windows 8.1 pro 64-bit small form factor custom built pc…I’ve achieved full nerd-dom.

I can control the precise color combination of a rgb led light attached to an arduino microprocessor which is attached only to the internet and a power source – no direct connection to a computer needed. And this is all controlled through three javascript sliders (one each: r,g,b) on a webpage I put together myself that has a webcam feed embedded within it (thanks to VLC and html5’s video tag). The webcam shows the internet-changeable light so you can watch the action happen nearly live. (Now, it really only works on desktop Chrome, but who doesn’t use that?…and only when I have the webcam on which is 25% of the time, but it works goddamnit, and I’m proud of my geeky achievements over the past year.)

Future additions to the led controller web page will be a demo video transcoded to work with any browser when the webcam feed isn’t live and a more responsive (the seeming new buzzword in web design) page.

So I’ll expound upon the details of these and other geeky topics in upcoming blog posts, along with my unfiltered views on politics, the environment and perhaps life in general. So here’s to all my future blogging endeavors!
